Condobolin is a prime wheat, sheep and cattle producing town. Agriculture is the pivotal industry and provides much excitement during harvest time. In the year 2000, the silos at Condobolin recorded the largest grain receival in the Eastern States in a single season - a huge 216 000 tonnes. Other Industry includes fruit and mixed farming, retail and small business.
Cowal Gold Mine
Barrick's Cowal Gold Mine is located approximately 32 kilometres north of West Wyalong and around 350 kilometres west of Sydney. The mine became fully operational in March 2006, it has reserves of 2.5 million ounces and is expected to produce 230,000 ounces of gold per year. The Cowal mine has provided a significant boost to the local economy - it employs around 290 people, injects money into the local area, provides educational opportunities for locals, and supports projects and organisations in the local communities. In 2006, Cowal was the first gold mine worldwide to be certified under the new International Cyanide Management Code - a framework for safe and environmentally responsible manufacturing, transportation and use of cyanide products.
