Aboriginal heritage, historical societies and arts & crafts

The Wiradjuri People have left their mark upon the landscape - Manna Mountain has ancient axe grooves, Yellow Mountain with its fossil finds and Mount Tilga provides a breathtaking view of the surrounding country.

The Wiradjuri people have lived here for many thousands of years and have left their stamp on the region. Currently an oral history project is underway to record some of the stories of the old days.

A small, enthusiastic group of aboriginal people are carrying on the tradition of didgeridoo playing, dance & boomerang throwing. Our local aboriginal artists are hard at work producing stories and depictions of their rich heritage.

The pioneering past is preserved through the region's historical societies. The original Commercial Hotel in Condobolin, now the Condobolin Community Centre, houses the records, books and photos of generations of pioneering families kept lovingly by the Condobolin Historical Society. Lake Cargelligo Historical Museum houses the history of the town and farming community while the Lake Cargelligo Tourist Information Centre is home to the amazing Alf Tyack Rock and Gem Butterfly Collection.

The Historical Societies of Condobolin, Lake Cargelligo and Tottenham have much history and heritage at their fingertips and on display. For anyone researching family history, members are only too happy to help. The libraries too have many sources for your reference and reading. All newspapers are now on microfilm.
